This November, we’re heading back to the 90’s, digging out our Docs, and sewing Grunge-inspired clothing!
You can sew any pattern you want, from plaid shirts to babydoll dresses. Be totally authentic, or adapt grunge to make it new. It’s your choice!
Use the hashtag #grungesewalong on Twitter or Instagram, and when you are done, don’t forget to upload your pics to the Sewcialist Flickr group! If you happen to blog about the sewalong, you are welcome to use the graphic above!
What grunge music are you going to listen to while you sew? Post us a link in the comments below, or share your sewing plans! If you aren’t into grunge, what were you listening to instead?
Wow! I have to refresh my memory … 🙂 It could be fun!
We’ve got a couple of inspiration posts lined up – I wasn’t into grunge myself, so I had to doa lot of googling even to make the logo/graphic!
Logo is great! Lot’s of memories 🙂
Heh. Grunge hit the world when I was in my early 20s, so I have to admit to wearing long johns and Docs under my plaid baby-doll dresses and inside-out, oversized shirts. I even bought my first pair of Docs at Camden Market in London, way back before the days of internet ordering, so I felt super legit. Oh my.
I’m going to have to find some embarrassing photos to post.
You are so legit! 😉 Woah. I definitely want to see pics! I was slightly young and far too nerdy to really be into grunge, and didn’t have a single counter-culture bone in my body at the time… but I’m so excited to see what everyone comes up with for this sewalong!
I think I was more “grunge lite”– my fashion choices were restricted largely by my school’s dress code, and I was still a very young teenager when it was at its peak. So while I was listening to Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, I was also listening to U2 and DMB. (But no boy bands. Ugh.) I never really got into the babydoll dresses, but insecure teenage me did love to rock the oversized flannel shirt. And I had plans to make a plaid flannel shirt for another sewalong anyway!
I can’t wait to see your plaid flannel shirt! I’m tempted to make one too, but also rather intimidated! So many people have made great Archers, but I’m not sure my first attempt at fitting a shirt should also be in plaid! 😉
Grunge! I was all about babydoll dresses – worn with the obligatory white t-shirt underneath – and my beloved 6 hole Docs 🙂 Pearl Jam was my band of choice.
Oooh, yes, I can see you in that! i really wish I still had my docs – have you held onto yours?
It’s gotta be all about Hole, Nirvana, and Bush. And I am going to find the more perfect fabric while I am in London….I perused some inspiration a la Courtney Love and her baby doll dresses and I know exactly what I am going to do! But now what about all my Hot Topic shoes I got rid off?? I no longer have appropriate footwear….hmmm…….
I can’t wait to see what you come up with!!!
Oh yeah! Love this one!! (Only now I have to decide which pair of Docs I’m gonna be matching my outfit to…. Hmmm….)
You have multiple pairs of docs? I’m jealous! I had a pair back in the 0’s but silly me got rid of them…
I may happen to have three pairs…. Ha ha! Total grunge girl at heart 😉
Help! I keep sliding into boho- any suggestions?
I”m the wrong person to ask – I have trouble nailing down the grunge look too! Lady Katza and Clare are going to do some inspiration posts though…
If i get to rewarch Singles its all worthwhile, right?
Definitely going to have to watchalong with this one….haven’t got a clue what grunge is, the 90s were when I was a suit and was having kids so I suspect I wasn’t paying enough attention, I definitely can’t tell you what music I was listening to then…probably still The Police and The Smiths. Can’t wait to see what you all make and whether it rings any bells.

Oh man! I just might have to try and find some old photos. Growing up in Seattle at the time it was weird when grunge became a “look” that people spent a lot of money and effort trying to achieve. Here we all thought we were dressing casual, comfy and not looking like we belonged in a Gap ad. (Khakis still make me shudder.) For those of you without a pair or four of Doc’s, Converse sneakers were the other footwear of choice. My best advice is to go with the spirit of grunge and not spend too much time trying to get it “right” because that’s not what it was about. It may not have been the most fashionable time period, but it never wanted to be. As for music I’ll be listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, the Pixies, Garbage, the Presidents, Bush and Alice in Chains.
